Deliciously Easy Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

Originally known as Cottage Pie, it was a practical and delicious way for families to repurpose leftover meat into a comforting meal. Over the years, the recipe evolved, becoming a beloved staple in households around the world. Today, Shepherd’s Pie continues to captivate taste buds and warm hearts with its timeless appeal.

Ingredients:

  • Ground Beef: 1 pound
  • Onion: 1 large, finely chopped
  • Carrots: 2 medium, diced
  • Frozen Peas: 1 cup
  • Garlic: 2 cloves, minced
  • Worcestershire Sauce: 2 tablespoons
  • Beef Broth: 1 cup
  • Tomato Paste: 2 tablespoons
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon
  • Black Pepper: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Olive Oil: 2 tablespoons
  • Potatoes: 4 large, peeled and diced
  • Butter: 4 tablespoons
  • Milk: 1/2 cup
  • Cheddar Cheese: 1 cup, shredded
  • Instructions:

    1. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes
    • Place the diced potatoes in a large pot of salted water.
    • Bring the water to a boil and cook the potatoes until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
    • Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
    • Add the butter and milk to the pot and mash the potatoes until smooth and  creamy. Set aside.
    2. Cook the Meat Filling
    • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
    • Add the chopped onion and carrots to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
    • Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
    • Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
    • Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, tomato paste, salt, and black pepper.
    • Simmer the mixture for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
    • Stir in the frozen peas and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
    3. Assemble and Bake the Shepherd’s Pie
    • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Transfer the cooked meat filling to a greased baking dish and spread it out evenly.
    • Spread the mashed potatoes over the top of the meat filling, creating an even layer.
    • Sprinkle the shredded cheddar  cheese over the mashed potatoes.
    • Bake the Shepherd’s Pie in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
    • Allow the Shepherd’s Pie to cool for a few minutes before serving.
    • Serve hot and enjoy the comforting flavors of this classic dish!
